  • Neither.
  • It is really confusing, this along with http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/754542 I'm not seeking help to do a homework but rather find out which is which. My sister and I take CRT 205 classes, we are in different classes with friendly instructors; However... when we turned in our assignments of categorizing fallacies, two instructors claim different choices to be different answers. My sister and I had a heated discussion about this before we turned in the assignment, here my instructor is in favor of my sister's view, and her instructor is in favor of my view. Its terribly confusing! Quote 1: Sure, I’ve heard that it’s better to not eat cheeseburgers every day, but it’s extra protein and protein is good for you. My Choice Category: Red herring My Instructor's Opinion: Straw man Quote 2: From a teenager confronted by his parent about breaking curfew: “Why do we have to keep harping on this curfew thing? Let’s talk about that A grade I’m getting in algebra.” My Choice Category: Straw man My Instructor's Opinion: Red herring -------------------------- Quote 1: Sure, I’ve heard that it’s better to not eat cheeseburgers every day, but it’s extra protein and protein is good for you. • Straw man, as it's falsehood or misrepresentaion meant to conceal the true nature underneath. A red herring would be "Yes, but my yoga instructor tells me I'm his most advanced student." Straw man is meant to twist or conceal the truth, whereas a red herring uses an unrelated matter to lead you away from the truth.
  • red herring
  • A straw man is when you set up a flawed argument (often by putting words in another person's mouth) to overcome that with logic supporting your own opinion. This seems like neither a red herring, nor a straw man, but instead a counterpoint. If I absolutely had to choose, I would call it a straw man.

If this is intended as a serious question, then it is a poor example. As a health related question, yes, the cheese is additional protein and protein is good for you, however, excess fat and too much protein is usually not good for you, so combining the two is a bad idea. In the same vein, a better example of a food-related straw man is "That Diet Coke I ordered cancels out the effect of that cheeseburger, nachos, salad drenched with ranch and hot-fudge sundae I just wolfed down." Sadly, I witnessed that last example.
  • Neither. It's argument by assertion fallacy. There is little protein in burgers as the burger is not entirely meat.
