Look at the art as a form of expression - and attach emotion to that expression. Its about making it personal to you.

You can't always appreciate every form of art. If I understand art to be a manifestation of the creator's emotions, insights and ideas then it has to find and speak to you in a certain way, and not everything will. It's like trying to force yourself to enjoy a television show or book you know just won't do it. Also, contemporary fruit basket and flower vase art is always deemed as art and I won't disagree, but it seems pretty loose these days and certainly is NOT the only form of art that exists. Also, your avatar is awesome. ;)

Just enjoy it for what it is and how it makes you feel. If you really want to understand art more, then start with art history...study various movements (along with what was going on at the time). Most art is a reflection of someone's interpretations of a subject. It's helpful if you understand the history of the events that were occuring with each of the movements. Understanding the history will also help you pick out things that may otherwise go unnoticed. Especially during the renianssance when many artists were censored by the church they would use symbolism to express things they ordinarily could not (due to the church laws). I suggest you start with the Baroque period and then move forward :)

Here is a website that should provide an opportunity to learn the basics: http://www.artcyclopedia.com/ After you learn a bit about art generally, consider George's answer in this thread. Ultimately, making it personal is where you'll find true enjoyment in art.
