Only if they're violent
-
Nah..

Yes. If someone is a thief, a fraud, a cheat, a reckless or dangerous driver, etc., they are a danger to society whether they're violent or not. They should be put in prison, lose their priveleges and be put to work until they are either rehabilitated or have contributed something of value back to society.

Jail should be for people you're afraid of, not people you're angry with. The punishment for someone who hoodwinks you out of money should be vastly different from the punishment for someone who steals it from you at gunpoint.
-
If we don't put criminals in jail how will we punish them?
-
Yes. If the penalty for the law they broke calls for jail time, then that is what they should get.
-
Yes..if you commit a crime, you should face the consequenses. However, I don't think that nonviolent offenders should be housed with violent offenders. Some people say that they aren't..but I know for a fact that sometimes they are.

If they commit non violent crimes, yes ... not for as long as violent offenders who also commit the same crime, but with added violence ... but it would be nice for them if there were two types of prisons, one for violent and one for nonviolent criminals, just so they can be kept both out of society yet also out of a violent enviroment so their offences will not tend to escalate to violent crimes when they get out.

Yes. Justice shouldn't be served based on how violent we are, but whether we follow the law. :)
-
Yes.Having my house broken into by a non-violent loser was no fun and I would love nothing more than to see "IT" rot in jail.

I think that there are non-violent crimes that should NOT get jail time. Like marijuana use or grow ops. That is ridiculous! Thousands of young people rotting away in jails, for using or growing a natural plant! Can we really afford this? What if the government decided tomorrow that nicotene or caffeine (both more harmful than weed) were now the 'illegal drugs'? What then? Would we fill up our jails with those users? I don't think so. Obviously, those who pose a threat to the security of the public should be incarcerated, but those who don't should be given a fine only. After all, it's all about the money anyways, so think of the revenue they would pull in from all those fines!

A person can be dangerous without ever being violent. Jail should be for prevention--so if someone is dangerous, you put them in jail to prevent them from hurting someone. But jail should also be about rehabilitation. It should be a service not just for law-abiding citizens by protecting them, but criminals too, by giving them a chance to get on the right track.

Only if nonviolence becomes a crime. ;)
-
do you like someone stealing your lawn equipment every time you lock it up or suck the gas out of your car, or break into your house when you are gone to stay out of jail?
-
Jail is FOR non-violent criminals. Violent criminals are supposed to be held in a prison for very short times: i.e. until the execution date. While in jail, they should be put to work to repay society for their crime.

Uh...Yeah....Identity theft is a serious offense.
