  • To be around like-minded and friendly people, to recharge their spiritual batteries, to hear a hopefully inspiring message. It's analagous to the fact that it's a lot harder to get a good physical workout at home alone than it is to do so with others, in a class or gym. Some people love the tradition and ceremony of, eg, the Catholic mass, or might go to her the music. . But also, none of my beeswax, but you don't have to worry about why other people believe the way they do. Even if narrowminded bigots have labeled you or mistreated you, if you put yourself in the role of the person who has to oppose them (or even call Christianity "a hot brick"), then that can easily be a source of negativity and judgmentalism in your life.
  • They have been indoctrinated by established religion to believe that they have to go to church, generally on Sunday. This serves two purposes: control and direction of the reading/study of scripture so that the clergy can tell them (and reinforce it weekly) what it means, and bringing the congregation together to give to the collection plate and tithe. Money talks, my friend. Now, what people REALLY need to do if they want to avoid everlasting hellfire and damnation is come around to my house once a week and tithe (tithe - to give 10% of your income).
  • well, it's a gathering of like minded sheep, the bell corrals them into the pen.
  • Jesus taught in the temples...HE traveled city to city , same as the Apostles....they (including Christ) taught in homes, on mountain tops, etc. the apostles were disciples then..they did not become apostles until after Christ died..HE then sent them out to teach the Gospel... Christs church(his body, not a denomination or building) did not begin until Pentacost Day(after the Resurrection) and Peter began it..soley on his CONFESSION that Christ was the Messiah..this confession was the FOUNDATION of Jesus body (church) where 1 or 2 are gathered "IN MY NAME", I will be there also... Christians are supposed to meet and pray and study and learn and HELP people...and witness or teach to bring all they can to the Lord..same as the Apostles..and all the disciples of Biblical times... It helps us to ENDURE.... the Jewish temples were as corrupt as the Jewish High Priests that had HIM crucified...HE said as much in that it was NOT HIS Father's HOUSE anymore..and their Father was not HIS Father...their Father was Satan... Jesus traveled to assemblies of Believers, HE baptised , taught, etc. just as HE told the Apostles to do .... I hope this helps..I once had all these thoughts and confusion the same as you , for about 25 years, but I never stopped trying to understand, thought I never would...at a very LOW point in my life , I really started studying on my own and it just started falling together..I pray the same for you..I hope this helps..
  • You dont ahev to go to church but let me put it this way... i have friends and with my friends i have a relationship... i tend to call my friends and visit them right and just about every normal person wants to visit and call their friends... so if your a christian and you have a RELATIONSHIP with God then why would you not want to go to church to "visit" with him and you should also "call" Him and talk to him (pray) but thats just my answer to your question
  • Christ didn't need any help to follow Christ's teachings. I do. Church helps.
  • it's the christian way of honoring the sabbath, i guess
  • some people go for the fellowship and to hear the word of God. Some go because they fear hell...
  • they go to church to see their friends and go out to dinner after church. its a big social network of friends who dont help each other. the church doesnt help any of the members. the church just takes their money for different missionary campaigns. people go to church so they can give money to the needy. and meet for dinner afterwards.
  • Christians are also admonished to neglect/forsake not their gathering together to worship. Whether one does or does not attend church does not determine whether he goes to heaven or hell. Christ attended "church" when Joseph and Mary realized he was missing, and returned to Jerusalem to find him reading and discussing the scriptures with the elders. The purpose of going to church is to strengthen your faith and religion, become more knowledgeable about the scriptures, and fellowship with like-minded believers. There are myriads of "real" Christians who have not been to church for years because they are physically unable.
  • ...its more of a "club" for alot of people, a social status... but its also good if you find a really good church to go and feel good about the sermon. They often have really good stuff there, and its spitiual food for the body, and something to reflect on during the coming week till the next one. But you dont havta...but you can.
  • Maybe because the ones who go aren't real Christians.
  • organized religion has killed many a kind spirit
  • It's about having a support structure. Being around people who share similar views is more likely to encourage/strengthen your own. That said I don't think you HAVE to go to church to be a Christian... what if you got stranded on an island?
  • Going to church is good if you like gathering and such . I on the other hand found it full of religion and judgemental people who want to sit in the church and judge everthing from what your wearing to what your driving and wanna talk about how their so holy not everyone mind you but in my opinion alot to me these people have religion But im more into a relationship with God when i do go to church i have to ignore the people i mentioned but then they come around acting so fakey and i know their talking about me and my family and how we dont go to church when we leave . So i rather have my prayer time and study time with me and my family or just alone with God and usually those are the most refreshing times i have . Chuch in God's eye i think is a place to gather and worship together but not all but most religious one have made it a social come as we want you club .
  • Jesus said do not forsake the gathering together for where two or three are gathered in My name there I am amoungst them. This is very true. However, Churches today are for the most part only teaching their personal church doctrin and garnishing it with a little scripture to make it sound good. I do not attend any church because everytime I do I get sick to my stomach listening to the down right lies perpetrated by some preacher that does not teach because if he did so, even if he knows, the top click members will fire him and replace him with one that does their bidding! Then they turn around and wonder why people quit attending and wring their hands because the young people rebel and refuse to go! People like to go to church because they like to show off their new clothes, they like to feel important, they like their ears tickled with happy little say nothing sermons.
  • Real Christians ARE the Church, when two or more are gathered together.
  • They are brainwashed, that's why. The true Church by biblical standards is and will always be the Temple of the Holy Spirit. 1 Corinthians 6:19 "What? know you not that your body is the Temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have of God, and you are not your own?" Now what's the Temple? The Temple is what you believe from within.
  • In years past I enjoyed going to church. As the Lord God began teaching me more at my request I started learning much of what is taught in churches is half truths and many down right lies. Most preachers teach what the in-click desires which is usually just ear tickling. Churches too often are no more than social clubs. .Through many years of teaching the Lord God has given me a very good Bible knowledge. I questioned much of it from time to time but the Lord God would bring to me additional proofs. Many think I am nuts and off my rocker but I can back up everything I say with proof. Today I consider myself to be a Liberated Christian.
  • Will you cite the source of your quote, please? Jesus overturned tables in the temple not market stalls in a church. We've been commanded to gather together in Deuteronomy 31:12- 13, 1st Thessalonians 5:11, Psalms 5:5, Matthew 12:30, Hebrews 10:25, Colossians 3:16, Matthew 18:20. Probably several others. I personally go (though not recently) for several reasons some already mentioned but I don't think you really care what my reasons are if I'm wrong let me know and I'll come back and spend a little more time elaborating. I don't mind.

Jesus overturned the money changing booths outside the temple because they were cheating the people. Only a certain coin could be used in the temple and had to change the people's money into this special temple coin. The money changers were cheating the people by charging too much. Thus a den of thieves. There is no place in the Bible that says you have to or required to go to church. It says to gather together in His name and He will be in their midst There were temples at that time but not churches. Words are very important and the correct usage of those words or there will be misunderstandings

Yes the people of the congregation are the church not the building. And that's why I pray for the Holy Spirit to guide and direct me. I believe in James 1::5 where it says if any of you lack wisdom let him ask of God who give it to all men liberally and upbraideth not and it shall be given him. As described in verse 6, of course. He was simply cleansing the temple. However, I don't learn scripture so I can fight about it. I simply State my opinion and let other people believe what they will. That's between them and God.

KJV Matt. 21:12 "And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves,"
    • Thinker
One could not use just any coin in the temple it had to be special temple coin. Jesus was upset because the money changers were cheating the people by charging too much for the coins or too much for the sacrifices. This is the only time recorded of Jesus becoming violent.
  • cause it says that in the bible that we're supposed to go
  • probably cause everyone else says they have to go to church
  • (Hebrews 10:25) not forsaking our meeting together, as some have the custom, but encouraging one another, and all the more so as you see the day drawing near. It does not have to be in a designated building... Abraham praised Jehovah in a tent... And if in a building, it does not have to be luxurious or flashy.
