In my band music, there's a quarter note with a slash through it's stem, and there are three small dots above it, slightly smaller than staccato dots. What might these symbols mean?

I believe that it would mean that you would play 3 notes on that one count, and it would be staccato. So almost like a triplet. The dots would be sligtly smaller simply becuase there would be 3 dots instead of one about on written note. From what I remember in band music, notating it like that was mostly a shorthand.
