Some people call it a living room. Years ago it was the Front Parlor;That's where front room started. It use to be the best room used only when one had company.

Yes,the front room was traditionally situated in the front part of the house,and would be termed ,as well,as the family room ,where people would eat TV dinners in aluminum trays on TV tables watching TV.They are probably called dens now.They were also a room that was out of bounds to sit on the family couch ,for it was only for company.The family was often relegated to the basement ,which was renovated into a den.

When I lived in the midwest where I was born, we refered to it as the front room. Hadn't thought about that in awhile.
