What is the difference between a first and second alto?

Depends on the context. Obviously, first alto sings the higher part in the piece. In SATB pieces, there's not much of a difference in how high or low you're singing. In SSAA pieces, generally the alto 2s are in the lowest part of the voice range a lot.

I learned it as first alto lower, and second alto higher...but idk.
