Depends on the size of your living room and how much light it gets (i.e. windows). If it's large and light, you could get away with painting it a strong darker colour, like red or blue or something. If you're not feeling that couragious, how about you do one or two walls a dark colour, and the others light? Apart from that, if you don't want to go too crazy, you could have a very very pale anything. I painted my old bedroom a very very light blue - sometimes it looked white, sometimes blue. Basically white paint with a hint of something else in it.

Stay away from yellow. We painted ours yellow (I thought it would be sunny and lively) After a month the whole family was snappy and depressed. We repainted it a color I call stucco pink and voila -back to our old selves. Then I read a how to book that said stay away from yellow for this very reason. I couldn't have read it earlier? It would have saved me a lot of trouble. Yellow highlights are fine. Good luck and have fun with it. Part of the joy of painting is that you are not stuck with it. Life is good.
