  • it's from a song in easy rider. it means pass it on.
  • It comes originally from Humphrey Bogarts habit of smoking cigarettes down to the nub until it burned his fingers.
  • In my community "To Bogart" has always meant "to impose your will over another" ie. "He tried to Bogart his way in line", or "You try'na BO-gart somebody?!" ~edit~ From Wiktionary: http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/bogart
  • It was originally "don't Bogart the cigarette". Humphrey Bogart was a really heavy smoker, and it started out on a studio set (don't recall which movie), were people who were smoking heavily were told not to Bogart.
  • There was an old song titled "Don't Bogart that joint". Basically means: don't hog the weed, man. Don't Bogart That Joint Lyrics: Lawrence Wagner Music: Elliot Ingber Played by Little Feat's Paul Barrere and Bill Payne with Phil & Friends. The original verson (on the soundtrack of "Easy Rider") was by Fraternity Of Man. It was subsequently covered by Little Feat. Chorus Don't bogart that joint my friend Pass it over to me Don't bogart that joint my friend Pass it over to me Roll another one Just like the other one You've been holding on to it And I sure will like a hit [chorus] Roll another one Just like the other one That one's burned to the end Come on and be a real friend [chorus] Recordings 1969? Easy Rider (Soundtrack) 1988 The Last Record Album (Little Feat)
  • My guess would be that Humphrey Bogart played the role of a Captain in a fictional film based on a novel. Both were titled "The Caine Mutany". The mutany occors all because of "Straberries". He thinks people are "stealing" from him on his ship. Although as a viewer it is not clear if that is true, the main idea is that he is going a little crazzy, and thinks people are stealing from him and his ship. It you watch the film, take note that Bogart-the captain has at least 1 or more portion of strawberries than any one else on the ship - It appears as though it is he who is the culpret for their being no strawberries left - hence "Don't 'Bogart' that..." There is a great clip of it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BB3stQg6nXg
