• I think you might be confusing documentaries with Hollywood films. **At least in my experience**, documentaries almost always mention the illegal activities and more remarkable murders engaged in by particular mafia bosses and henchmen, in addition to emphasizing power struggles. BEING documentaries, they typically cater to the television audience and (therefore) tend to be a little on the family-friendly and we-can't-gross-people-out-too-much side of things. Hollywood films typically imagine one or two horrific scenes, also emphasize power struggles, and in addition emphasize the (probably usually imaginary) friendships, family and romance.
