That is accually a misnomer. Helmets are accually big thrill seekers and are wearing the humans for protection.
-
Gloooory, glory, what a helluva way to die... he ain't a gonna jump no more!
-
For a false sense of security..hey at least if the chute doesnt open my head will be saved..LOL :)
-
Have you ever been hit in the head by an object traveling over 100mph?
-
They should wear hairmets. Just like a helmet except there is extra room on top so their hair doesn't get messed up. I think they just wear helmets in case when they land they may trip or something. It's for after they touch down, not for if the chute doesn't open.
-
So they don't die if they land on their head, duh.
-
So that they dont die if they hit a bird.
-
I wear one so my hair is neat when I land.
-
We were helmets to mount video cameras to. They also have a slot for an audible altimeter that gives warning alarms at various heights which is very handy if you get distracted. Skydiving helmets are not saftey helmets they are thin and not ment to offer serious protection however they can prevent you from being knocked unconcious in freefall. Also good at protecting your ears from the wind noise
-
Isn't that where the camera goes? Aside from that. If the chute doesn't open, they are screwed. False sense of security I guess.
-
well u gotta think about birds and stuff that might hit them,
-
Turkey and Scooter have good points! But that made me think...why did kamikaze pilots wear helmets??
-
So we can scoop them up, when they hit the ground.
-
Helmets reduce their head from shattering into 100 pieces to 90 pieces.. Nothing else.
-
They DO do some good. A woman fell thousands of feet and survived partially because her helmet took a lot of the blow to her head. The rest of her body did as well. But there was enough leftover landing force to have killed her had her head recieved all of the impact remaining.
-
Actualy, it is the helmets who are the thrill-seekers. They are wearing the humans for protection.
-
If your parachute doesn't open, I don't think anyone is counting on the helmet to help very much. But firstly, you never know, there have been cases where a helmet has helped save someone's ass in a skydiving accident, and secondly, it's not as though the fall can't be a little rough even if your chute *Does* open.
-
I am thinking..umm..Nope, you hit the ground from jumping from a plane, I don't think that helmets gonna help ya one little bit..well maybe keep your head intact for the open casket funeral.lol :)
-
Sky divers wear helmets for protection if in collision with other jumpers and also they can house their audibles theses give a bleep at a set altitude for canopy deployment. Also if the skydiver has completed over 200 jumps they are allowed to jump with a camera.
-
The helment isn't for free-falling to the ground from 3000 ft. It's for the landing, in case they stumble and fall on their head or maybe even hit their head on the door jumping out of the plane. A conscious person naturally has a better chance of survival than an unconscious person who can't pull the ripcord.
-
use a helmet when freeflying with other skydivers. never knows when they fly "headdown" towards your head
-
To hold the toupe in place
-
so that their ear drums don't pop from the altitude
-
safety first! Can you imagine if your parachute hung and you hit the ground at 50mph? What if you wanged your head on the way out the door? Ever hear of 'bird strikes'? That would be a bummer to hit a goose at 110mph. There are a million and one reasons to be fully conscious at all times while free-falling. PLUS, a million and one reasons to protect your head if you hit something while landing.
-
So they can break the fall with their heads.
-
better question is why bother skydiving out of a perfectly safe airplane?
-
It keeps their hair in place, even when they hit the ground, their hair will look nice for the funeral.
-
When in FS (Formation Skydiving - discipline in which two or more skydivers join together in different positions to make different formations) they need some proteccion (full face helmet)to prevent geting kicked in the face. The helmet also warms up the head when is really cold and blocks the windy noise during the fall
-
Protection from "IN_AIR" collisions with birds and other sky divers. Has this really ever happened?
-
In case you happen to hit your head while exiting the plane. They could also be useful in parachute landings off of the dropzone. I wondered the same until I started skydiving.
-
I guess in case they land on their head. Mind you the damage to the rest of their body would be unfixable but they would look good in their coffin :)
