Alaskas' purchase from Russia in 1876, I believe William Henry Seward was the secretary of state who made the transaction.

Sewards Folly was the derisive name given to the purchase of Alaska from Russia

It's to do with the purchase of Alaska by the US from Russia for 7.2 million dollars in 1867. People thought Seward was a fool for purchasing a frozen piece of tundra for such a high price. In the end, it wasn't really much of a folly and when you consider the natural resources up there (gold, oil etc.) the purchase was practically a steal!
