You can take on cigs but not a lighter or matches.

You can take a pack on board. no lighter, no matches, but you can hold them in your hand and smell the tobacco, all the way to your destination. Take plenty of chewing gum or mints. you will need them. Its federal offense to smoke on any airplane, period.

Sure you can bring them on a plane. But given the time you're at the airport before you can board and the time it takes to get your bags after you land, they'll probably be pretty stale.
-
If you don't smoke them, probably. Nowadays, smoking is forbidden in many aeroplanes. But maybe the far of terrrism makes cigarettes forbidden in aeroplanes even if you just bring them.

Yep, cigarettes are no problem. Of course no smoking. Not even in most airports. A few around the world do have smoking sections. If you need to smoke, try an electronic cigarette. There is good info about them at http://www.e-cig.org and a shop.

I was flying from London to Italy two weeks ago and saw an advertizing of ePuffer Electronic Cigarette inside the plane in the magazine. This is funny because I had my ePuffer Magnum with me and have tried to smoke it once I saw the ad. I was enjoying my cigarette for about 2 minutes and then one of the girls walked to me and kindly asked if I can continue smoking at the end of the plane or in the washroom, because some people are still not familiar with it and may panic when see the smoke. So the answer is yes, it can be smoked on an airplane. More info about ePuffer is available on their website http://www.epuffer.com
