Bubble wrap has been used extensively since its introduction in 1960. It is commonly used for wrapping delicate items when people move or for storage, but large electronics companies and other industries rely on bubble wrap for packaging and shipping their products.
Bubble Wrap Design
The original bubble wrap was developed for industrial uses by the Sealed Air Corporation. Air was sealed in small pockets and integrated into strong plastic sheeting to act as a cushion. This concept worked well for shipping delicate items.
Versatility
Variations in the size of the sealed air pockets have created a wider range of use, from ¼-inch bubbles for small, fragile items to one-inch bubbles for larger, heavier items.
Economy
Prior to bubble wrap, fragile items were stored and shipped in paper products, including newspaper and bulk wrapping paper. It required a great deal of paper to properly protect delicate items. One layer of bubble wrap can do the work of several layers of paper, saving pulp resources and money.
Superior Protection
Companies that ship very delicate electronic components use bubble wrap exclusively. Manufacturers of consumer electronics, medical instruments, and other sensitive items rely on bubble wrap to protect their expensive products for shipping.
Specialized Applications
The Sealed Air Corporation now offers several varieties, including static-free wrap for electronics, triple-layered wrap for large, heavy items and pre-made bags that are ideal for items such as glassware, bottles and photo frames.
