<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Candian Banks Are Safe
According to the World Economic Forum in Geneva, Canada's financial system is the healthiest in the world. No Canadian bank has gone belly up or even asked for assistance from the Canadian government since the start of the international financial crisis in 2008.
On the Other: Canada's Economy is Tied to the United States
As the world and especially the United States goes, so goes Canada. As long as the economy of Canada's southern neighbor and main trading partner is weak, there's risk to Canadian banks, especially those with loan exposure to the United States or other recessionary economies.
Bottom Line
The Canadian economy and banking system have suffered in recent years, especially because of declining exports to the United States. But because of prudent lending policies in the early 2000s and effective regulatory oversight, Canada's banks haven't been pulled into a morass of debt.
