Types
Popular types of leeks include varna, splendid, durabel and the giant musselburgh. Leeks like the varna variety mature in 50 days while the giant musselburgh takes 150 days to reach maturity.
Nutritional Composition
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a half cup of raw leeks contains 25 calories and contributes to the daily recommended value of vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium, iron and fiber.
Uses
Cooks use the bottom white part of the leek to accent culinary dishes. Soups, sauces and casseroles benefit from the mild onion taste leeks provide.
Growth
According to the University of Wisconsin Department of Horticulture, leeks grow well in cool weather and benefit from full sun exposure.
Storage
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend storing refrigerated unwashed leeks in a plastic bag to prevent odor transference.
