  • Penicillin was not invented, but it was discovered. In 1928, the Scottish research scientist Alexander Fleming left a bacteria-smeared culture plate in his lab. When he came back to it two weeks later, he found a mold had developed, keeping the bacteria from growing. He later named the active ingredient "penicillin".
