The precise inventor of the sand-filled hourglass is unknown, but it has been a commonly used device through ancient and even modern history. In ancient Egypt, Prince Amenemhet built his father King Amenophis a water clock so that he could tell the time during the night. But temperature fluctuations causes water to flow at different rates, and sand was eventually used in place of water to keep constant time.
