  • Painting your car can give pleasant results if you take the time to do it correctly. The project begins with prepping the vehicle for paint. The more thorough you are at cleaning and sanding the vehicle's surface, the better the paint will adhere to the vehicle. Supplies you will need consist of soap, a water supply, sponges and towels to wash the car. You will also need 400 and 600 grit wet sandpaper and tools to remove exterior automobile parts.

    Find a place to paint

Move the automobile to an open area outside or in a large garage. If you are painting the vehicle in a garage, the enclosed space needs to be well ventilated. If you plan to paint the car outside, make sure the weather will cooperate and be wary of general debris. Plan not to move the vehicle after washing it, as this may get the vehicle dirty again.

    Wash the vehicle

Wash and rinse the car. Remove all dirt and debris. Dry well and let the vehicle sit for an hour or two to make sure all moisture evaporates. Remove every item that is detachable that you do not want to paint. This includes bumpers, lights, pieces of trim and mirrors. Wet-sand the entire surface with 600 grit sandpaper. The purpose of this step is to remove any excess or flaking paint. Use 400 grit paper on tough areas.

Use a spray primer and tape

Use a spray primer on any spots where the paint was completely removed. This will ensure that you don't get uneven spots and the paint will not chip and peel. Tape off any trim or areas that are not to be painted. Use standard painter's tape. Walk around the vehicle twice to be sure that you got all of the spots that need to be taped.
