When you first get a new pet, there are all kinds of questions you need to ask yourself. One of the questions you'll need to grapple with is what accommodations that pet requires. For a parakeet's cage, you'll need a few staple items to keep the bird comfortable and cared for.
Nourishment
According to petpublishing.com, there are a few basic items you'll need in the parakeet's cage, the first of which is rather obvious: food and water. Single, separate feeders are required for each.
Perches
Another crucial element of the parakeet's cage is a perch or, rather, several. According to parakeetcages.net, these perches should be made of different materials and in different sizes in order to promote health in the parakeet's feet.
Toys
The third most important thing a parakeet needs in their cage is a supply of toys. Mirrors, swings and bells will all pique the parakeet's attention, according to totallybirds.com.
Cuttle Bones
Although not as necessary as food, water and entertainment, a cuttle bone can be a nice addition to the cage, according to birdguys.com. A cuttle bone is a good source of calcium and keeps a bird's beak in good shape.
Ladders
A cage ladder works on two levels, according to birdtricks.com. Not only does it provide another means of exercise and play, it also gives the parakeet something healthy to chew on instead of the metal or acrylic bars of their cages.
