<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Spring and Fall Fertilization
Cool season grasses grow best during the early spring and early fall, when the temperature is between 60 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Your yard should be fertilized just before each peak season, meaning the first signs of spring and fall weather.
On the Other: Summer Fertilization
Warm season grasses grow best during hot and dry summer months, when weather is typically in excess of 80 degrees. For this reason, most yards with warm season grasses are located in the southern United States and tropical regions. Fertilize your lawn heavily just before the peak season, which is usually sometime in late May, and again lightly during late summer or early fall.
Bottom Line
Optimum grass fertilization depends on the grass type and location. It is best to fertilize your yard heavily just before it begins to reach peak growing season. You may also want to fertilize lightly toward the end of each growing season. Cool season grasses have two peak seasons, meaning fertilization should occur around four times per year, while warm season grasses should be tended to at the beginning and end of each summer.
