  • A dry scalp can be itchy and embarrassing--people don't want the resulting dandruff scattered across their shoulders and down their backs. A dry scalp can also cause oily hair. When your scalp is dry, the gland at your hair root will try to compensate by secreting more oil. This is why people with dandruff also often have oily hair. The dry scalp is the problem, not the oily hair.

    Shampoo Regularly

Daily shampooing with a moisturizing shampoo may solve the problem all by itself. The Health Services office of Columbia University explains that by moisturizing the scalp with daily moisturizing shampoos, the dry scalp normalizes, the dandruff thus goes away and the oil glands stop producing so much oil.

    Adjust Your Diet

People with dry skin may be short on zinc, B vitamins and essential fats. All of these may be taken as over-the-counter supplements, but ingesting them in food is better. Fatty fish, avocados and nuts, among other foods, all contain essential fats that serve the entire human body in many ways, not just the skin. Avocados are also a good source of all the B vitamins, except B12, which is in fish, poultry and beef. Many fresh vegetables, especially the dark green varieties, are good sources of the B vitamins. Chicken, pork, crab and especially oysters are good sources of zinc.

    Manage Stress

Stress shows on your scalp. All people have some stress in their lives, but when stress starts to get the better of you, it begins to show in and on your body. Your hair and scalp are two of the outwardly obvious places. Counseling, exercise, loosening up your schedule or just venting with a friend who's a good listener can all help with stress management.

    Tea Tree Oil

Some shampoos are now made with added tea tree oil, which has antiseptic, antibiotic and antifungal properties, according to the Mayo Clinic. Some people, the clinic cautions, may have an allergic sensitivity to it. Dry scalp sufferers can it as a daily shampoo.

    Humidify

Dry indoor air, especially in the winter, can dry the skin. Many physicians and the Mayo Clinic recommend running a humidifier to ease the problem. In addition to easing a dry scalp, it will also help the rest of your skin and may ease sinus problems related to dry heated air. The Mayo Clinic cautions that humidifiers need to be kept clean to prevent fungal growth.
