Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a condition in which stomach acid goes back up the esophagus, causing heartburn, acid reflux and damage to esophageal lining. GERD has been around since as early as 3,000 B.C. as Mesopotamians had a word for "heartburn." Ancient Romans wrote about heartburn, as well.
