<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: They Can Be Safe
As long as the crib meets the safety standards made by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) in 1999, the convertible crib should be safe. Convertible cribs are popular because parents can keep the same bed and room décor longer.
On the Other: Some Models Get Recalled
In 2008, the Playkids U.S.A. convertible crib was recalled because the sides of that model were made of mesh that, when expanded, created a gap between the mattress and the side. This caused an entrapment and suffocation hazard.
Bottom Line
Do not let infants sleep in any type of crib made prior to 1999. Check the recall list at cpsc.gov before putting your child in any crib. The CPSC warns against any crib that has slats so wide that a can of soda can fit through.
