Tablets and laptops are both portable computers, but tablets may not have all the regular features of laptops in addition to their touchscreen and handwriting recognition/conversion capabilities.
Laptops
Laptop computers generally consist of a keyboard and touchpad base, which contains the computer hardware. A hinged screen is attached to this base.
Tablets
Tablets have touchscreens that lie flat for writing or navigating the operating system and programs. There are two major types of tablets. One is a simple tablet without a keyboard, called a "slate," which is often used in professional settings, like medical facilities, for record keeping. The other type resembles a laptop computer, but the screen swivels to lie flat and face-up for writing and touchscreen use.
Brands
As of 2009, nearly all tablet computers are PCs running Windows, though Apple may release its own tablet model in 2010.
Cost
Tablets, especially laptop-style tablets, can be considerably more expensive than laptops. Many models cost over $2,000, compared to less than $1,500 for all but the newest or best laptops.
Durability
Screens on full-featured tablets swivel and are handled much more than standard laptop screens, making screen damage more likely.
Computing Power
Tablets typically do not have powerful processors and are not designed for graphics-intensive uses, especially slate tablets.
