<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Made of Safe Materials
Ben Wa balls have been used safely for centuries. Most modern Ben Wa balls are made of glass or silicone, a plastic known for its antimicrobial properties and resistance to water. Ben Wa balls usually come in a clean, safe storage box. Silicone is hypoallergenic, and non-electronic silicone sex toys can be cleaned inexpensively using boiling water.
On the Other: Infection May Occur
If Ben Wa balls and other toys are shared, they can transmit STDs, particularly human papillomavirus. Most commonly, Ben Wa balls and other silicone sex toys can cause allergic vaginitis, resulting in extreme tenderness and swelling in the vaginal area. Ben Wa balls used in the anus and then in the vagina will likely cause bacterial vaginosis due to cross-contamination.
Bottom Line
While Ben Wa balls are generally safe to use for strengthening pelvic muscles or for sexual pleasure, improper care and infrequent cleaning can result in serious vaginal infection.
