Visitors must take precautions when they travel in Bali, Indonesia. Be vigilant, and try to be careful at night and in more dangerous parts of the city. The U.S. State Department urges people visiting Bali to "to monitor local news reports, vary their routes and times, and maintain a low profile. U.S. citizens must consider the security and safety preparedness of hotels, residences, restaurants and entertainment or recreation venues that they frequent." The State Department also lists crimes of opportunity and encourages tourists to use cash and avoid credit cards. "Drink spiking" is a problem on the night club scene, with men the target of drugged beverages.

On the Other: Certain Areas are Safe

Although there might be crime in Bali, there are a number of contained resorts that offer swimming, scuba diving and outdoor activities. These resorts and retreats are closed to the general public, and they work to assure the safety of their guests. If a visitor sticks to these and other guarded locations, safety is not as much an issue.

    Bottom Line

U.S. citizens who maintain a low profile and take extra precautions can be relatively safe in Bali. The U.S. government does not actively discourage people from visiting there, whether it is for work or play. American travelers are the most safe when they are in areas with large Western populations or in well-traveled tourism sites. Always carry your passport and make sure to have a list of phone numbers for reputable hotels, cab companies and restaurants.
