Helium-filled balloons can rise to a height of approximately 5 miles before they either begin a descent or burst. Theoretically, if a helium-filled balloon doesn't burst, become snagged in trees or power lines, or spring a leak, it can travel for many hundreds of miles before eventually descending to earth.
