  • When a person is diagnosed with diabetes, their entire life undergoes a significant change. Now they must be extremely attentive to every single thing they eat and drink--especially when it comes to drinking milk.

    How Many Servings?

A diabetic should have only two to three servings of milk per day, which generally means two or three cups of milk per day. However, a person's weight and level of diabetes makes each case unique.

    Carbohydrates

A glass of milk has 12 grams of carbohydrates per 500mL. The more carbs a person eats, the higher their blood sugar goes. A diabetic should be getting roughly 50 percent of their calories through carbs. Any more puts them at risk.

    Other Dairy

A diabetic should only have two or three servings of dairy all day, meaning if they use their allotment on milk alone they should not ingest other dairy products such as yogurt and cheese.

    Suggested Milk Types

The best milk choices for a diabetic are fat-free, low-fat or unflavored soy milk because they contain lower amounts of fat. Drinking milk high in fat uses the diabetic's daily allotment of calories on food without them getting much nutritional value.

    Dangers

Drinking over two servings of milk a day will add the number of carbohydrates and sugars in a person's system, raising their blood sugar to risky levels. If a diabetic's blood sugar levels are high, they may be forced to exercise to work it down to an acceptable level. But before doing so, make sure to consult a doctor.
