The prostate is a gland in males that is located just below the bladder. In the initial stages, prostate cancer does not exhibit any discernable symptoms, which makes it hard to diagnose until it has spread to other areas.
Statistics
According to the Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF), 1 in 6 men in the United Sates are affected by prostate cancer. There are about 2 million men in the United Sates suffering from prostate cancer.
Symptoms
Men with the following symptoms should immediately get tested for prostate cancer: problems with urination, reduced flow or force of urine, and blood in urine or semen.
Risk Factors
Black men are more likely to develop prostate cancer. Men are more likely to develop prostate cancer if they: are older than 50, have a family history of prostate cancer, are overweight, have high testosterone levels.
Treatment
Common treatments for prostate cancer include: external beam radiation therapy, radioactive seed implants, hormone therapy, surgical removal of prostate gland, chemotherapy, cryotherapy, and gene therapy.
Prevention
Men can reduce the chances of developing prostate cancer by avoiding high-fat foods and exercising regularly. Some medications, such as NSAIDs and finasteride, may delay the occurrence of prostate cancer in men over 55 years.
