The Jewelers of America officially adopted the modern birthstone list in 1912. But gemstones have been treasured for their beauty---and their colors have held meaning for people---for thousands of years.
Blue
The deep blue sapphire of September symbolizes ocean and sky, explains Bernardine.com, denoting stability and harmony.
Green and Yellow
The deep green emerald of May and the sparkling light green peridot of August are the colors of the natural world. Refreshing green stones represent prosperity and fertility, while November's topaz---a deep, golden yellow---signifies intellect, philosophy and happiness, Bernardine.com says.
Purple
Amethyst, the birthstone for February, is purple---the symbol of royalty---and denotes wisdom and spirituality.
White
The clear or white birthstones are the brilliant diamond of April, the iridescent pearl of June, and the milky white opal of October. White is the color of peace, and symbolizes innocence.
Aqua and Turquoise
The pale blue aquamarine of March and December's turquoise are blue-green colors considered strong and comforting.
Red
The red birthstones are the deep red garnet of January and the clear, bright red ruby of July, which evokes romance. Red is also the color of health, strength and energy, according to Bernardine.com.
