  • Absolutely. I would vote based on merit not on religious affiliation. You can be moral, a good leader and a good person without being religious.
  • Yes. Religion or lack thereof doesn't really influence my vote. I would not want to vote for someone who is obviously going to try to push his religious beliefs on the rest of the country, though.
  • That's like asking a person if they would go to a church lead by a republican minister. I don't see how it really makes any difference. A person's view on politics and their views on religion don't really have anything to do with one another.
  • There is nothing spiritual about the white house so why not?
  • No, i would like a good person with religious beliefs but that doesnt FORCE it on us...an athiest would just take off religion...and probably make this nation a communistic one!
  • No. Our Constitution and government were set up on basic beliefs in a higher power, referencing "God" specifically. I think it would be a huge act of hypocrisy. I wouldn't vote.
  • Yes. Makes no difference to me whether or not the Commander in Chief is a Buddhist, Atheist, or something else as long as that did not influence how the country was run.
  • No, atheists are predisposed to believe that something doesn't exist until proven to them. I believe this is an illogical position and anyone that holds this position has closed his/her mind to a universe of possibilities. Therefore I cannot in good conscious trust that this person would be a proper representative of a nation in which the majority are looking for something to put faith in.
  • Most definately! Religion is the cause of so much conflict in society, past and present! Take the Middle East countries for example, you've got conflict arising from Palistinians, Shi'ite and Sunni's, then you've got Ireland with Catholics and Prodestants. Take away the one thing they're passionate about (religion) and you have very little grounds for conflict. George Bush I believe is a devout christian and has imposed alot of christian beliefs upon America's society such as gay rights (e.g. legal gay marriages), which have also reached our shores through a little push over by the name of John Howard. So to answer your question I would say Yes to an atheist President or Prime Minister. Good morals are better than a questionable fairytale.
  • I would, as long as his ideas for our country seemed sound and rational.
  • Yes for their affiliation with religion or without religion does not effect their morality.
  • No I would not.
  • yes. if he/she were the best canidate. religion has no place with my decision. (prime minister)
  • Absolutely I would. Yes! Imagine a president not getting his instructions direct from god or his imagination? A president who used logic, research and informed debate to make policies rather than the bible or what his pastor told him?
  • Absolutely, yes, IF I agreed with their political positions and policies. Religion has no bearing in my decision A common misperception is that atheists lack ethics or right/wrong, and I can tell you from experience that it isn't true at all.
  • Yes. I think the less religion is involved in politics the better. I also think that it doesn't matter what religion the President is as long as his views are representative of his people and he does his job properly.
  • This is a tough one. It's just hard to imagine a person who believes there is not a god being president of a country founded in christianity and made great because of it's collective faith in god. I am not some kind of religious zealot but an atheist being president of the U.S. would be the equivalent of Angus Young playing lead guitar for a gospel group. It just doesnt quite fit.
  • I didn't vote for Bush and I'm a Christian. I would have to say yes. If I felt lead to do it I would. But just as I would not force my beliefs on them I hope they would not force their beliefs on me. I would happily share what I believe with them if they would share what they believe with me.
  • well dude i dont agree w/ athiests and they're beleifs, but like iv'e said before i respect, and i dont descriminate due to religions, but im not sure an athiest for president would be the best idea...either way it wouldn't affect my vote considering i don't realy vote....
  • Yes, because I think the line that is supposed to separate church and state keeps getting smaller and smaller. I think an atheist would have less bias on controversial issues.
  • No. The world is too crazy not to have some kind of faith base.
  • I would in a heartbeat. I vote on their views on things, not their religious standpoint.
  • I vote for policies not a persons religious views. If it is the best man/woman for the job ,in my opinion ,I would vote for them no matter what their religious beliefs
  • No...I would hope that the President believes in more than himself.
  • i wouldn't care what religion or lack of they were, just as long as they were just and moral and a good person.
  • I think atheists and religious people have a lot in common, they are both so sure of something they can't prove. However, this would not effect my voting choice because I don't vote for someone based on religious beliefs.
  • Yes. Especially after seeing what the one so-called Christian's infusion of religious ideals has done to the USA over the past seven years, yes, I would.
  • Hey after reading all the answers people have given maybe you would like it better if we just take off "in God we Trust" on our money. I wonder why that phrase was put there to begin with...if someone knows I would really like the answer to that question.
  • Why not, people voted for a retard for president
  • All of our original laws, constitution, bill of rights, blah, blah, blah were ALL based on religion. We really haven't gotten so far advanced in our politics to get away from it. Religion builds governments and it also breaks it down. No matter what anybody says the passion in whatever a person is deeply committed to will ultimately be the driving force to dictate the direction of the government. All I know is, anybody that I vote for has to have some sort of faith foundation and believe that there is something greater than his or herself. Otherwise you are going to have an even bigger ego that will be even harder to manage.

  • No. Edit: You should have stated in your question that you didn't want those who disagree with you to answer. Edit: We are "One nation under God" and "In God we trust." I don't think an atheist could agree with those principles.
  • Most voters wouldn't in America. Recent poll suggested 85 percent of Americans believe in God, with more than two-thirds being Christian. I don't think people vote for people who don't share the same values they do.
  • yes. i vote for people based on their political stance on different issues, not their affiliation with any political party.
  • Well thankyou people - I feel just a little safer in my bed tonight, with 26 out of 34 of you believing in merit and competence, over belief in what I see as dangerous fairy-tales. I really expected it to go the other way. No joking - I have a bit more confidence that there is good sense abroad in the US tonight after all. Perhaps the world is not in as much danger as I thought, and these religious extremists can be got under sane control.
  • It's quite heartening to see so many happy to vote for an atheist. But quite curious since a fairly recent Mori poll asking a similar question had only 34% willing to vote for an atheist.
  • Absolutely. I don't trust anyone who believes in God. They're living in delusion.
  • Why not? As long as your not a retard.
  • I will never vote for a president, as I am Canadian, but a politicians religious views would have no bearing on whether I voted in their favor. I would prefer an atheist to someone pushing their religion down my throat.
  • Yes. Absolutely. With the way the Christian Theocratic Right is trying to infuse religion into government, that'd most likely be a sure way to win my vote (so long as policy stances were acceptable).
  • Abso-freaking-lutely. Uhh separation of church and state anyone? Our founders intentionally stated that because of how the British government is setup. We came here to escape that, and no matter how good the politician is, if they're religious it's going to influence them. And then we end up with stupid laws like no gay marriages.
  • Hell Yes!
  • NEVER. To believe there is no God is just dumb. LOOK AROUND YOU!!! How did this stuff get here by chance? It didn't! It was created! And not by aliens.... And evolution is the biggest load of garbage I have ever heard, I mean it is rediculous! I have read that evolutionist's believe a whale evolved into a wolf for crying out loud! Darwin himself stated that it was just a theory. Separation of church and state was NOT INTENDED TO BE THIS WAY by its founder! The government took that and changed it into something totally different. However if there was a president who was pro gun rights and the competition was dead against them, I would vote for the candidate for gun rights no matter what else they believed!!! And if he lost I would move to Finland. I may do that anyway, as I like the cold.
  • Sure I would infact i would vote for an atheist before I would vote for Dr.Laura if she was running.
  • No because I DO NOT vote
  • Interesting question. I suppose I would if I was convinced of his moral ethics, character and depth of commitment over the other candidates.
  • OH! MY LORD YES!!! OK, I'm making fun cuz being an atheist I would never say my lord, but I think that's what this country NEEDS big time!! DR'ed for having an opinion....fundies again.
  • No, of course, I would not vote someone professing to be a Christian but that is a part of an Occult society as president either. I used to support President George W. Bush(and I do respect his position as president, even though I do not agree with him and what he does) until I found out more about him. Anyway, no I would not vote an atheist for president because I do not believe it is right for me as a Christian to do so. -In the Master's service. Thank you and God bless you!
  • Yes, if they supported the issues I was in favor of and had good character.... In short I don't care what any candidates religion is, keep it to yourself. Politics and religion go together about as well as a gallon of whiskey and an 18 wheeler. I'm sick of hearing I was raised "such and such".... it has nothing to do with whether I'm voting for you or not.
  • Not necessarily, it would depend on their policies and whether or not I thought they were competent and had the people's best interests in mind. But I can tell you one thing for sure, I would *Not* vote for a firm fundamentalist Christian (Or devoted follower of any other religion, for that matter) if they let their beliefs influence their political decisions.
  • No. Sorry, but no.
  • Yes. They couldn't do any worse than the present occupant.
  • Yes. Absolutely. I'll vote for whoever is going to be FOR THE PEOPLE, regardless of their religious affiliation.
  • Definitely. With most political leaders pushing their religious views ad infinitum, I would find an atheist/agnostic candidate to be a welcome change from the status quo.
  • Never - Religion and the freedom to WORSHIP is one of our Country's fundamental rights. How can you protect that right if you don't believe in religion?
  • I'd hope that wouldn't be the only issue the person would run on. I WOULD vote for an atheist if he or she ran on the right issues. Christians tend to desire voting for other Christians or for people of faiths that they're familiar with because this IMPLIES but doesn't indicate what the candidates morals MIGHT be. Atheism really doesn't indicate or even imply any stance on moral issues, ethics, or any political positioning. It's not a belief system. I wouldn't vote for a religious individual BECAUSE they're religious and I wouldn't vote for an Atheist BECAUSE he's an atheist... I wouldn't vote for a white guy or a black guy or a woman just because of their race or gender -- but on their positioning of the issues and the moral of their character and the actions they've made in the past.
  • Yes, I most certainly would.
  • Yes i would. i honestly think Obama is a Muslim. there is no difference between an Atheist and a Muslim. I cannot comprehend either so i see no difference.
  • very much so, having a open mind in office might bring this nation back from oblivion
  • I wish that was all we had to choose from!
  • yes... better than having a severly christian anti-gay person... i'm not gay... but most of my friends are... in my opinion anyway!
  • Most definitely, but only if that person's politics were similar to my own. (Very conservative on defense and law enforcement, somewhat liberal on social issues - though not in favor of any type of "socialized" things - and moderate on most everything else.)
  • Yeah i would, as long as the openly atheist didnt say anything RUDE towards my relegion. Blasphemy and ignorance I wouldn't tolerate in any man.
  • as long as he/she doesn't say or do anything against other religions there's still a chance...
  • I am not American, but I would certainly vote for an atheist leader. I would know that his decisions would be based on commonsense, and he would not make foolish emotional decisions based on his own religious beliefs.
  • In a heartbeat, keep religion out of politics and wars are a thing of the past.
  • If I were an American I would regard atheism as a definite asset. It would mean that he or she would not make a irrational decision based on emotion caused by religious faith.
  • No In God We Trust is more that just in empty phrase to me
  • Only if I thought their policies and beliefs were moral, and that they wouldnt take up a position against religion. Separation of church and state, remember? I shoulnt base my vote around someones religious affiliation. Atheists shouldnt reject candidates because they are Christian, and Christians shouldnt reject candidates because they are atheist. Its like the whole theology in public schools debate. The state is crossing the line by regulating theology out. I realize the school isnt a church, but the subject is related, and its ousting is based on the same biases. Theology can be taught in an unbiased way, as an anthropological social science. But it the one and only academic study that is forcibly removed from the education system because of scared atheistic parents who arent interested in a full spectrum of education. Its no different than having those same atheists who would have the government pass laws forcing all candidates to be atheist, just to keep religion out of government.
  • Yes, as long as I agreed with his/her platform and policies. I would vote for the candidate who best represents the interests and well-being of the general population, not special interests (including religious groups). As far as religious affiliation goes, I would actually prefer an atheist candidate, or at least one that has no declared ties to any organized system of religion. Religion and politics should NEVER go hand-in-hand, although I fear it is already far too late to disentangle the two in our nation.
  • I will vote for anyone who stands a chance if they are not a member of the republicratic party. better to throw the dice then keep the traitors we currently have.
  • No, the country is in a mess and we need a praying - worthy President to turn things around.
  • Very probably.
  • Absolutely. Religion should have nothing to do with politics.
  • Hell yeah, the government might actually follow the constitution for once, and everyone would have the rights that they deserve.
  • Yes I would as long as the person is well versed and prepared in the required issues. I believe, not sure, that the constitution does not permit a non Christian to be elected president. I could be wrong on this one.
  • of course, if i like their positions and their agenda.
  • no if they are an athiest there are going to be many issues we don't agree on
  • Absolutely NOT.
  • oh yeah, i would vote for an atheist president.
  • Yes I would. If the election was for a preacher, that might be different but for an office in a secular nation, their faith would not matter to me in deciding my vote.
  • yes but the church would be pissed off
  • Yes. I believe state and religion don't mix.
  • Yes, as long as their policies stood for the right things.
  • Um yea.
  • yes i would, just as easily as i would vote for a religious person. it all matters on what policies i would think that person would stand for. if i agreed with them, i would vote for the person.
  • If I ever got the chance. Actually I believe that many presidents have been atheists, but they are in the ultimate don't ask/don't tell situation.
  • Not if I disagreed with his/her political policies.
  • It would be considered a positive for me. However, the atheism should be incorporated into his policy just as the religious shouldn't be incorporated into policy. He should take a neutral stance, while defending the separation of church and state.
  • Not on the basis of their lack of faith alone but I certainly would if I found them to be a good candidate. I do admit I would be drawn to pay more attention to such a candidate.
  • No. I'm a believer and for me, this would be a deal killer.
  • I'd rather have an atheist president than a bible thumper, born again anything, mormon, 7th day anything, penta-whatever, or extremist muslim, conservative or hasidic Jew, or any of those folks who knock on my door on Saturdays.
  • No. In my experience, 'openly' audacious atheists are too focused on their version of evangelism to be very useful in other far more critical areas of life. And they have NO tolerance for those with opposing opinions. Never a good thing in a Presidential candidate.
  • Yes. George Washington was a president. One of the best. And we all know there have been others who PRETEND to be religious because morons want presidents to be religious.
  • Yes, I would.
  • a presidet doesn't represent a god.... I vote for someone to manage a country both financially ad socially, not religiously....as long as there are no wars and Im not bankrupted because of taxes, I don't really care what god you pray to or even if you do pray for a god....
  • Much more easily than an avowed theist yes. It would mean after all voting for someone that puts human beings above stories first and generally at least tries to use critical thinking. To my mind, those would be recommendations, not detractions.
  • YES!! They aren't tied down by delusions. When in a tough situation, instead of wasting time on prayer, they will think clearly and take appropriate action.
  • Absoloutly - infact I would perfer to do that then voting for a "believer" of any stripe.
