Laptop computers get hot while they are in use because of myriad factors. An overheated laptop can seriously impair computer functioning and possibly cause injury.
Cooling Fan
Broken cooling fans cause the laptop to overheat. Mechanical problems or changes in your laptop's operating system impair cooling fan functioning.
Air Vents
If the cooling fans are functioning properly and the laptop is still hot, the laptop air vents might be blocked. Dust build-up blocks air vents and prevents hot air from being expelled, thereby causing the laptop to get hot.
Processing Chips
The laptop's operating and video chips are filled with programs that are needed to execute computer functioning. When processing chips are not properly designed, they cause the laptop to overheat.
Battery
Laptop batteries can cause the computer to get hot because the lithium inside the battery overheats during charging. Battery overheating led to a 2006 recall of Toshiba, Dell and HP laptops because they were burn and fire hazards.
Prevention/Solution
Clean the laptop vents with a compressed can of air or purchase a laptop cooling pad to place under the bottom of the laptop. Additionally, use the laptop on slanted surfaces to allow air to circulate. If the laptop continues to overheat, take it in to be repaired.
