Each woman's cycle dictates a different fertility schedule. There are times during her cycle when a woman is most fertile and can become pregnant, usually lasting from seven to 10 days.
Regular Cycle
The typical menstrual cycle lasts 28 days, though many women have a longer or shorter cycle. It's normal to have a cycle that is 20 days long, or 32 days long. Every woman is different.
Ovulation
Ovulation is the process in which a woman's ovaries release an egg into the fallopian tubes for fertilization by the male sperm. For a woman with a standard cycle of 28 days, ovulation will usually take place around the 11th day. For women with different cycle lengths, the date will be different.
Fertilization
During the time that the egg is presented in the fallopian tube, the woman is able to get pregnant by male sperm. The egg will remain in the fallopian tube for around one week.
Menstruation
If the egg is not fertilized, around day 17, the egg dies and is absorbed by the fallopian tube tissue. It is sloughed off during the menstrual period.
Sperm
As sperm can live in the uterus for up to 72 hours, it is wise to use protection at all times if pregnancy is not desired.
