I went to one in Monterey last November. It was a two day affair at Pebble Beach Golf Club. It was of course a fantastic affair but I am sure that some people could have bought a starter home with the money that the wedding cost.

No matter how much is paid, the food for a crowd that size will be lackluster. Mom did weddings for years.

My son and daughter-in-law had a wedding like that. Though there were corners cut wherever possible..it was terribly EXPENSIVE even without being overly extravagant. A very beautiful and touching ceremony.

I had a friend at work who had over 500 guests at her wedding. She is Indian and in her culture it is pretty common: http://www.indianweddingsite.com/planning/planning_article.php?articleID=Out_of_Town_Guests. She said a lot of the guests were friends of her parents but she knew some of them and her own friends were there too. She didn't get to speak to all her guests though.
