Most newer movies and DVD's are made with the intent of using a multi-speaker surround sound system. If you don't have one, then the problem is likely that the movie is trying to shove all the sound out through your TV speakers, and the voice (which is usually center channel) is getting drowned out. The solution would be to either get a surround sound system if you don't have one, or adjust it if you do have one.
