The summer solstice (sp?) which is usually around June 21 or 22. Not sure when it is supposed to be this year.

During the summer months, the North Pole experiences twenty-four hours of daylight daily but during the winter months the North Pole experiences twenty-four hours of darkness daily. # http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Pole#Day_and_night ----- By "day" are you refering to daylight hours or the time it takes for Earth to make a complete rotation on its axis?

Here's three ansers for you: The longest calendar day on earth so far is 31st December 2005 which had 86401 seconds, which it shared with twenty three other dates since 1972. The longest solar day so far is the last one you experienced - because the Earth's rotation is slowing. It was 86400.002 seconds long approximately - and slightly longer than the one before that. The longest day so far sunset to sunrise is six months long and is experienced near either pole every year.

Due to gravitational effect of the Moon, the energy of Earth's rotation is slowly being absorbed by the Moon. Hence Earths orbit is slowing down approximately by 2/100ths of a second per century, thus making each and every new day the longest day on Earth. If you want to refer to the longest day as the day with the longest hours of sunlight, then it would be around June 21st, when the sun reaches it's most northerly point. This day is known as the summer solstice. The exact length of daylight hours vary on your latitude, the farther north you go, the longer the day. All this is true only in the Northern Hemisphere, in the Southern Hemisphere all this happens around December 21st. At the North Pole the sun may not set for a couple of weeks making for one long day, but at the South Pole it's one long night. Then there is late October when many places set their clocks back 1 hour making for about a 25 hour day. http://thelongestlistofthelongeststuffatthelongestdomainnameatlonglast.com/long46.html
