When I was kid the people who lived down the street from us called their room interconnecting the house with the garage a davenport.
-
Yes. It was from a particular section of the country, east of south. Don't remember which. I also heard them refer to them as Daven-o, as slang for Davenport.
-
I read that word in a play once.
-
You know what I think I will do that now to mess with people.
-
A Davenport usually referred to a hideaway bed, where it could either fold out to a double or queen sized bed or down into a twin. In my area anyway.

There is a scene in the movie, "THE BIG STORE" (1941) where Groucho Marx is sitting in the furniture section of this store and Chico Marx walks in and asks, "Where's the Davenport?" Groucho replies, "It's in Iowa." Attached is a great clip from that movie, but not the clip I quoted.

Yes, my Great Grandmother used to.

Sure, but not so much since the 1960s. My recollection is that it is a sofa without armrests. Kinda like a futon, but does not fold out into a bed.
-
Yep! A great-aunt of mine used to refer to them as a Davenport!
-
My gram had a few friends that called sofas that.
