Nothing as a young child. My mom showed her dislike for my first husband (when I was 20) by losing about 30 lbs and being sad all the time. Otherwise I had free reign to follow whatever was of interest to me. I showed interest in the violin and took lessons for a brief time. Then I fell in love with the piano and my folks rented a piano for awhile until they were sure I'd stick with it and then bought one. I took piano lessons for 4 years and enjoyed it thoroughly. In terms of education, they followed my lead and tried to provide for my interests within their limited means. On a scale of 1-10 my dad was about 1000 and my mom was close behind! :)

We were always taught to treat other people as we wished to be treated or as my mother used to say Mrs Do As You Would be Done By. We weren't allowed to ever call anyone a liar or call anyone names at all however we felt and we had to take our shoes off as we came in the back door. I had three brothers and my mum had her work cut out by she always had a pot of tea ready for when we came home from school and the first thing she did was to pour us out a cup of tea. We didn't have a lot materially but boy that cup of tea always sticks in my mind.

Many things, when I was in high school. My sister and I weren't allowed out on school nights and weren't supposed to date until college. And the rest of my family only wanted us to date other asian, definitely no one that was "haole" which means white in Hawaiian. But I was a rebel and dated anyways to whomever I wanted which always turned out to be jewish boys. Other than that, the usual. No drugs, no drinking. No sneaking out. No cutting class. Blah blah. Stuff you don't always follow as a kid. But being in a traditional Hawaiian family, respect and honoring the family SO important so I never did anything that was too bad, and in the end, the parents put most of the rules there to protect you and your future. And it's good to rebel and learn from any mistakes you might make. You just don't want to hurt your family, so you gotta be careful.
