  • if you say what make and model your laptop is we could look for a manual to discover what controls the screen brightness. What do you mean by the 'Fn thing doesn't work'?
  • Is your function key broken? Is that why it doesn't work? Well, unplug it, see if that dims your monitor. It always did with my laptop.
  • My Toshiba laptop uses F6 and F7 to alter the screen brightness. Hold down the Fn key whilst using F6 or F7 to turn the brightness up (F7) or down (F6)....
  • My compaq says go to FN on the left bottom and then F7 and hit till it darkens. Good luck!
  • My Toshiba laptop..uses F6 and F7 to do this. Hold down the Fn key and press F6 to dim screen ,or F7 to brighten it.
  • I had this issue myself on my Acer. Even adjusting the backlight wasn't enough. I assume that your laptop has an Intel chipset with integrated graphics; most laptops I've seen do. I went into the Intel GMA settings on the Control Panel. Under "Color Correction", there are sliders for Brightness, Contrast, and Gamma Correction. I run my Brightness at -60 and even then I keep my backlight on it's dimmest setting most of the time. I also has to tweak the Contrast a little.
