Everyone with a conscience carries some guilt around with them if they are old enough, even if it is because of things they should have done but didn't. A conscience is something we all need to be human beings. It can make us better human beings. Of course I feel guilty about many things in my life. I try to use it to become a better person. Guilt should not be self-destructive. Make amends when you can.. but if you can't, do your best to avoid making the same mistakes.

Guilt is what makes us human beings rather than monsters. Most people aren't aware of this, but Tolkien stole the idea of a ring which makes people invisible from Plato. Plato called it the Ring of Gyges. The ring represents the ability to act without any kind of social constraint -- that is, without guilt.
