A woman can choose to keep her last name FYI. And it wouldn't show any dependence, it would show love for that person, and wanting to be with them for the rest of their lives, hence them getting married.
-
Why would the husband's first name be their children's last name?
-
Because women are stupid. J/k. No, because it's tradition and it passes along the male last name, which most men seem to care a lot about. I have wondered or not whether I would keep my name or not if I got married (which I'm not particularly interested in) and had mixed feelings. I don't like my last name all that much, but a part of me is a fem-natzi that doesn't want to give it up.

The only reason I would take my husbands last name is because I hate my father and want to get rid of his last name. Plus it doesn't show dependence it shows love and devotion. You can be perfectly independent women with your husbands last name.

I take my husband's last name because he earned my respect enough for me to take his name and attach my own name to it. There is no dependence - it's a team effort. If he ruins the name through unlawful practices or moral deficiency, then I'll drop it in a heart beat and go back to MY family name. (as will the children) So, he is the one who needs to be careful - not me, since I had a good and worthy name before I married him.
-
No, because after taking his last name, often times she takes the pants and wears them too.
-
No it does not. It just a traditional show of love and respect for her husband, an indication of her devotion. She doesn't HAVE to take her husband's last name if she doesn't want to. But it's so traditional and customary I think a lot of women still like to do that.
