because MASSACHUSETTS has the MA. And ML could easily mean milliliter, Major League Baseball (usually abbreviated "MLB", but sometimes simply "ML".) Medieval Latin, Merrill Lynch, Metropolitan line, a London Underground line and possibly Richter local magnitude (ML), MarylandD seems to work - not much mail gets sent to Meerill Lynch instead of Maryland by accident.

It was a doctor's daughter that the state was named after and there was an extremely large porportion of doctors living in that state, so when the Postal System started looking for an abbreviation they thought about the name, who lived there, etc. Well "MR" didn't fit, and "MY" sounded ridiculous, but "MD" fit and they got a kick out of that so there you have it. and it you believe this you're a sucker.
