A Clanger is British Slang for a blunder. So, I'm guessing that "drop a clanger" is to make a blunder. Clanger originated in th 1945-1950. (I had never heard this phrase before so I found it interesting to look up.)

A better question is what si the origin of dropping a deuce?

Just a guess, but could it be a reference to dropping a heavy tool or piece of machinery, something that would make a 'clang' when it fell onto a concrete factory floor?

I think I read somewhere that it came from when a bell ringer dropped the clanger at the wrong time, hiting a bum note. All suggestions concidered.
