Mr. Fishman had no opportunity to do anything with WaMu and he had nothing to do with the terrible situation with which he was presented. He is a banker with legitimate experience in preparing banks for purchase--he was hired with that purpose in mind. The WaMu board did not expect to be taken over by the feds and Mr. Fishman is clearly not an example of someone doing a bad job and getting rewarded. It remains to be seen what he does with the compensation he is entitled to.
