  • Only a professional can make a correct diagnosis. There are many criteria that need to fit the person's behavior and thinking. If the person is an addict it creates a huge problem with the diagnosis. The drugs may be part of, contributing to, or hiding the problem. Most professionals would not want to even try to diagnose someone with a drug problem because of this. Any psychotic behavior could be related to the drug use, so the person would have to be off the drugs first. This includes alcohol. They would be referred to treatment. If the person was diagnosed before the drug use that is a different story.
