I believe that will be the end of your engine. The pistons will smack the valves, and everything will come to a sudden stop. <ka-chunk> Edit: Are we talking about what most folks call the valve timing belt?

some cars have protection against engine and component damage caused by this its called a non-interference system i don't know if your car has this or not.

It would depend on what you where doing at the moment it broke, motorway cruising at 70 would be ....goodnight to your motor and possibly you. Ticking over at a stand still might be repairable ...but at a cost. Far easier to spend a bit now to give you peace of mind that it wont happen.

That depends on a few things. Number one is the design of your engine. A higher compression engine means less space between your piston heads and your valves at the top of the piston's stroke. So if your timing belt snaps, your pistons could impact any intake or exhaust valves that are open and do serious engine damage. It all depends on exactly WHERE your valves are at when the belt breaks. I had timing gears strip on a car once while I was driving down the interstate at about 65 MPH. I was lucky that no other engine damage occurred and it was a simple matter of replacing the gears. But another car I had stripped a gear and jumped time...and I ended up with valve and piston damage that made it not worth repairing, when you took into consideration the age and value of the car.

thanks for advice everyone, its not the cambelt, had a look this morning. The engine light on the dashboard is still lighting up but car will only turn over but still wont start.

all Toyotas are non interferiance fit. Unless youve had the head shaved to increase the compresion the valves cant come in contact with the pistons.

according to toyota forums it is a non interference engine, so there should be no damage. just be aware you would instantly lose all power, which could be dangerous if overtaking or pulling out of a junction. best to get it checked. when mine snapped 2 or 3 years ago, no damage was caused, and independent garage was able to replace it for under £200
