This is a question thats difficult to answer without seeing some sort of picture. Atleast the back of the hair to get some sort of idea what needs to be done to it. So I guess I would say just trim it for now before doing anything drastic to it.

OK, if you are a guy then I'd say go ahead with getting the 6 inches cut off. I have nothing against a guy with long hair, but it's true that you will get more respect if you keep your hair short. If you are a woman under the age of 45, definitely keep your hair long. You only have so many years that during which you will be able to have long hair, and long hair on women is in general very beautiful, and most guys prefer it besides.

think about the fact that it will always grow back. giving in a good cut now and then keeps it neat at the ends. i used to get told the difference between a bad haircut and a good haircut is about 6 weeks.

Here is my hair from the back. Now it is probably 2 inches longer, but other wise looks the same.
