It depends on that person's attitude toward our disagreement. If he is courteous and tolerant of my opinions, then we can politely debate the issue and settle with the beliefs we started with. If he is rude and belligerent...well, he can go screw himself.

If a person is consistent in their convictions, lives by them, exhibits integrity and passion, and can disagree without being disagreeable, I can find many reasons to respect them - starting with their humanity and moving toward their honesty and commitment. Agreement is not the criterion for respect in my book.

I don't care if they are rude or intolerant. If they make a strong case with due diligence towards reasoning and research, I will respect them. If they respond to my arguments, if they counter them, I'll give respect, even if I disagree. If they just repeat their premise over and over again (argumentum ad nauseum), then they quickly lose my respect.
