  • count calories, if you have a typical american diet, you may be eating way over what is needed. PB&J's, oatmeal, and beans with rice= all verry cheap. bulk dried pinto beans are less than $20 for 25lbs when I cook my beans/rice: use twice as much water as beans+rice boil beans for about 1.5hours(until beans have no crunch in them) stir while boiling every 10-20 mins then add rice and bring back to boil cover pot and let cool
  • Most of the way you save money is the way you shop: Stay away from prepared foods. They are usually full of salt, fat, and chemicals, plus they are expensive if you figure out the cost per ounce. A lot of stores have a little label on the shelf right beneath the food item that tell you how much it is per pound/ounce. Compare, compare, compare! Read labels for nutritional value. The lower priced items are usually on the lower shelves so you buy the higher priced ones.Look around. Check out "day old" bread. It's not really outdated--they just pull it to make rom for the fresher stuff. Check out the "reduced" basket (or shelf) but only buy something you need. It's only a bargain if you need it. Cut down on the size of meat portions. Beans are a good source of protein but can get tiring. Make lots of soups, casseroles, etc. Cut back on the goodies. Don't deprive yourself completely or you will end up "Binge buying". Eating out is expensive. Cook at home.
